If individual maps aren’t available a large map may be posted at the trailhead. Most parks have well marked routes indicating direction and distance.

 

Before hitting the trail, hikers benefit from having a basic understanding of what plants should be avoided. Know poisonous plants in the area so that they can be avoided. Everyone should know poison ivy and poison oak. Paths through damp areas may pass through stands of stinging nettles. Knowing what to look for can help the hiker avoid uncomfortable or painful encounters.

 

A backpack with bottled water, simple first aid, sunscreen and maps is wise even on a short hike. Brief preparation will assure that the day hike is an enjoyable experience.

Interest rates hikes on Car and Home Loans

Get prepared to shell out more in EMIs as banks have begun to raise rates, including prime lending and base rates. On Tuesday, private sector majors HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank hiked their base rates, indicating a rise in cost of borrowing for customers. ICICI Bank also raised deposit rates for various tenures.

The hike in base rates means that new customers taking housing and car loan from ICICI Bank and car loan only from HDFC Bank will have to pay higher rate of interest. Since Housing Development Finance Corp (HDFC) has not raised rates yet, those taking home loans from HDFC Bank will not have to pay higher rates.

This is because HDFC Bank’s home loan rate is linked to HDFC’s rates. Over the last few days several banks, PSU and private, have raised their rates. On October 1, banking majorSBI had raised deposit rates but held on to its base rates “for the time being”, indicating it could also raise its base rate any time soon. On Tuesday, HDFC Bank said it has increased its base rate by 25 basis points to 7.5% per annum from 7.25% earlier, while ICICI Bank too raised its base rate by 25 basis points to 7.75%. While the increased rate for HDFC Bank customers is effective Tuesday, forICICI customers the hike in rate is effective Wednesday.

Over the past days, several other banks have raised rates. These hikes came as a reaction to the RBI’s decision on September 16 to hike repo rate (the rate at which banks borrow money from the central bank) and also reverse repo rate (the rate which RBI pays to banks when they park their excess liquidity with the central bank), mainly to rein in the runaway inflation.

For example, on September 24, HDFC Bank had raised fixed deposit rates for two tenures — 6 months 16 days, and 6 months 17 days to 9 months 15 days — by 50 basis points each to 6.75% and 6.75% per annum, respectively.

MASCA is the second highest populated village on the island, after Parque Nacional del Teide. It is located at an impressive gorge that is as isolated as it is picturesque. This village is considered the prettiest village in Tenerife. With flocks of tourists arriving in the mornings and late evenings, the village is beset with activity. It was only recently, in 1991 that this village was connected to the outside world by road.

This village offers pretty sights such as old stone houses that give luscious and relaxing palm tree views as well as steep ravines that run down to the Atlantic Ocean. It is truly an amazing hike as the ravine can go as high as 600 meters above sea level with its narrowest path being 20 meters wide, but this is where the best of landscapes is, as you will view splendid and impressive swirling rock formations and unique vegetation. Soon, the crashing sea waves against the rocks turn into stillness as you head back towards the beach, but strong sea currents here prevent safe swimming.

Getting to Masca

The best mode of transportation to Masca is by car. If you are on a budget or do not want to drive up the challenging steep slopes, the public buses are an alternative but they are not very frequent. The third possibility is to join a guided hike to the valley which is usually offered at most major coastal resorts that also throw a shuttle ride into the town, as well as a boat transfer from the beach after you have enjoyed your hike of the Masca canyon.

Arona may be small but it has very pretty streets that are quite enticing for short strolls. Although it is a 17th century town, it is an excellent base for a 4 hour hike to the challenging 1000 meter summit of Rogue del Conde, which has a flat top for some refreshing views over La Gomera and south Tenerife.

The steep and loose hiking path goes along an open route to Conde for most of the way, then to an old road that leads to the hill’s plateau. The trail starts from the town church road that goes upward and across the main street until you come to an obscure road; this curvy road straightens after a while towards the mountain before reaching the statue of Jesus. From here, there will be distinct trail markers for the desired route which crosses a gorge. Heading left on the hill, the path grows steeper until the summit.

Transport and Food

There is a public bus that runs frequently every day and takes you between Arona and Los Cristianos and takes only 45 minutes.

Tapas bars abound in Arona but there are also plenty of restaurants for a delectable meal such as the El Patio Canario restaurant, which is operated by a Belgian-Canario family. This restaurant serves delicious Belgian and Canary culinary cuisine at reasonable prices.

Further away, off the Arona-Vilaflor road, is a rustic restaurant, the Refugio, which offers tasty homemade food with a fantastic view from its patio although its prices are a bit steep. It also offers board and breakfast operated by paragliders and hikers who are more than happy to advise on trails and hiking conditions.
