In any event, for the purposes of realizing our fitness goals- ‘comfort’ can also be detrimental. Specifically, choosing to remain within one’s comfort zones can put up barriers in terms of what a person will try, or how hard they are willing to work to achieve those goals.

A ‘comfortable’ working pace for most people is usually between 70 and 75% of their maximum heart rate. Instead of 3 sets of 10 repetitions for each exercise – fitness based destinations such as hiking the Inca trail in Peru… hiking the Grand Canyon or West Coast Trail… biking in the mountains or in Moab, Utah… or multi-sports such as triathlons or adventure races… heli-skiing, the list goes on – all serve to provide variety, purpose for our gym-based training, and a sense of accomplishment.

While we all want a degree of comfort in our lives – we must also manage that with a sense of completion.

Let’s all get outside our comfort zones a little more in 2009 and take something on that’s new, that scares us a little, and hopefully inspires us to do great things and see better results!

Warmer Weather Brings Great Fitness Opportunities

You need your energy to run a business, take care of your around-the-house chores, stay at your best on the phone, make the right financial decisions, and do all the things essential to living the life you want to live. You have to take personal responsibility for your vitality. While some elements of fitness are pure drudgery during the winter (schlepping to the gym, running on the treadmill, etc.), things get much more fun when the weather’s nice.

Exercise is only one of the five key daily health habits I call The NEWSS (Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sleep, and Supplements)… and you need to have some discipline in all five in order to lead an energetic life of vitality. Cut the garbage out of your diet and eat fresh, nutritious food.

Drink two liters of water ever day, and get your eight hours in the sack every night. And take good supplements to give your body what it needs, but can’t get from today’s modern convenience diet.

But don’t neglect the exercise. If you like the gym, great; keep your routine, or start a new one. But as summer approaches, think about adding some extra exercise to your days and weeks.

How long has it been since you shot hoops? Grab a basketball and head for the local park. You can even shoot hoops at the local schoolyard, once school is out for the summer.

Join a recreational softball or soccer team. Force yourself to have that one match a week that requires your presence (and fitness).

If you have kids to play with, your fitness is almost assured (just kidding).

If you don’t, look around and find some. You have a niece or nephew, or neighbor kid, who’d love to go with you on a hike or at least go out and toss the ball around with you.

Play golf or tennis. If you’re a golfer, eschew the cart and walk the course. If tennis is your game, find someone who’s just a little better at the sport to challenge you.

Go jogging, or just go for some long walks… the fresh air and sunshine will do you good, even if you don’t work up too much of a sweat! Just make sure you’re not replacing your real workouts with easier stuff – you still need to get your heart rate up to its proper aerobic level at least three times a week, and 5-6 is better.

Remember when you were a kid, and your mom would walk in and turn off those summer TV reruns and tell you to go outside and play? That might’ve been for her mental health… but it was good advice for your health, too. We all spend far too much time staring at glowing rectangles (you’re doing it right now). We have to do a lot of that, I guess. But at some point, you have to turn off the device, and just go out and play.
