Ways to Stay Hydrated While Hiking
Whenever you’re out hiking – whether it’s in the woods, on a beach, in the desert, or in the mountains, it’s always important to stay hydrated.
As our bodies are made of mostly water, replenishing this water level is critical to survival in many areas.
When outside, it’s always important to bring water with you, normally in sports water bottles.
Always fill up before leaving your house, hotel, or campsite, and ensure that you replenish your liquid levels at every chance you get.
Do you need to purify?
The answer is: Maybe
You should always carry iodine tablets with you when hiking. You never know if, in the event of an emergency, you’ll need to find water that may come from a questionable source.
Know if you have an allergy to iodine before using it.
A water filter can be carried, and is recommended for multiple day trips.
For lighter day trips it is usually more than is necessary. Filters will do a good job of filtering water, without leaving the aftertaste and potential allergy situation of iodine tablets
Plan ahead
Know where you’re going, and what route you’ll be taking.
Carry extra sports water bottles than you think you’ll need, in the event of an emergency. The little bit of extra weight will help you stay in shape!
Knowing where good water sources are is important to properly filling up your sports water bottles. Ask a local or tour guide, as they usually have a good understanding of where the cleanest spots to refill are.
Also, at look to bring powdered sports drink mix. It is compact and easy to carry, and will give you a boost of energy (and a bit of taste if you get tired of the taste of water).
